In the United States, there are several legal ways for a student to achieve a high school diploma. These methods ensure students meet state education requirements and are recognized as completing their secondary education. Below are the primary pathways:

1. Traditional High School

Description: Attend and graduate from a public, private, or charter high school by completing all state-required coursework and passing standardized tests (if required).

Requirements:

Complete a set number of credits in core subjects (e.g., math, science, English, history).

Meet attendance requirements.

Pass any required state exams or assessments (varies by state).

2. Homeschooling

Description: Parents or guardians educate the student at home, following state homeschooling laws.

Requirements:

File a notice of intent to homeschool with the local school district or state education department (if required by the state).

Complete the curriculum required by the state.

Maintain records of the student’s education.

Submit standardized test scores or evaluations (if required).

Some states allow homeschool students to earn diplomas through accredited online or umbrella schools.

3. Online High School (This is the option we provide the student)

Description: Enroll in an accredited online high school program.

Requirements:

Complete the online coursework and meet the program’s graduation requirements.

Ensure the online school is accredited and recognized by the state’s education department.

4. GED (General Educational Development) Test

Description: Students who are no longer enrolled in high school can earn a high school equivalency diploma by passing the GED.

Requirements:

Be at least 16 years old (age requirements vary by state).

Pass tests in language arts, math, science, and social studies.

May require enrollment in GED prep courses.

5. Alternative High School Programs

Description: For students who struggle in traditional settings, many states offer alternative schools or programs tailored to individual needs.

Requirements:

Complete a modified curriculum or individual education plan.

Often includes vocational training or additional support services.
